1 Chisinau, the history
The city of Chisinau, capital of the Republic of Moldova, is located on six hills, close to the Bic river, and represents one of the oldest and most important Moldovan localities. The history of Chisinau developed from the origins of Geto-Dacian and Roman life over two millennia ago, continuing with ups and downs in the turbulent Middle Ages and in the subsequent centuries of the feudal era, with rises in the development of trade and craftsmanship, with evident changes in economic and cultural order during the period of transformation from the old provincial market to a prosperous modern city.
The first documented attestation of the toponym Chişinău (Chesenau) dates back to 1436, in the document of the Moldovan voivode Ilie and the voivode Stefan Oancea, leader of the governor’s chancellery, where they establish the borders of the villages at the Raut river, which were entrusted to him as recognition for good governance. A spring served as a starting point in the creation of the toponym. “Spring, fountain, artesian well” – this is the meaning that the old word Chişinău would have had, now disappeared and preserved only in toponymy.

2 Chisinau, capital of Moldova
Currently, the Municipality of Chisinau is the political, economic, scientific, and cultural center of the Republic of Moldova, being one of the largest cities in Central and Southern Europe. From an administrative point of view, it is divided into 5 sectors: Center, Botanica, Buiucani, Riscani, and Ciocana. The local state power body is the Municipality Council.
