1 Chisinau, the history
The city of Chisinau, capital of the Republic of Moldova (Moldavia), is located on six hills, in the immediate vicinity of the Bic river and represents one of the oldest and most important Moldovan localities. The history of Chisinau developed from the origins of Geto-Dacian and Roman life more than two millennia ago, continuing with ups and downs in the troubled Middle Ages and in the following centuries of the feudal era, with rises in the development of trade and craftsmanship, with evident economic and cultural changes during the period of transformation from the old provincial market into a prosperous modern city.
The first documented attestation of the toponym Chişinău (Chesenau) dates back to 1436, in the document of the voivode of Moldova Ilie and the voivode Stefan Oancea, head of the governor’s chancellery, where the boundaries of the villages on the Raut river, which were entrusted to him as recognition for good governance, are established. A spring served as the starting point in the creation of the toponym. “Spring, source, artesian fountain” – this is the meaning that the old word Chişinău would have had, now disappeared and preserved only in toponymy.
