1 Chisinau, history
The city of Chisinau, capital of the Republic of Moldova, lies on six hills near the Bic river and is one of the oldest and most important Moldovan towns. Chisinau’s history spreads from its Geto-Dacian and Roman roots over two millennia ago, through the tumultuous Middle Ages and subsequent feudal periods, marked by phases of commercial and artisanal growth and significant economic and cultural changes as it transformed from a provincial market into a modern, thriving city.
The earliest known record of the name Chişinău (Chesenau) is from 1436, found in a document by the voivode of Moldova Ilie and voivode Stefan Oancea, marking the boundaries of villages by the Raut river, awarded as a recognition for good governance. The original name refers to a spring—“source, fountain, artesian well”—the meaning of the old word Chişinău, which now survives only in place names.

2 Chisinau, the capital of Moldova
Today, the municipality of Chisinau is the political, economic, scientific, and cultural hub of Moldova, as well as one of the largest cities in Central and Southeast Europe. As of January 1, 2014, Chisinau’s population totaled 804,500, with 731,700 in urban areas and 72,800 in rural districts. Administratively, the city is divided into five districts: Centru, Botanica, Buiucani, Riscani, and Ciocana. The local city council is the main governing body.
3 Chisinau, the white city
Because most of its buildings were built with white limestone, Chisinau is often called “the white city.” It attracts tourists with its historic and cultural sites, beautiful parks perfect for relaxation, vibrant nightlife, and local restaurants for every palate. Chisinau is also known as “the green city” in the region.
