In the features, red domes that tower in the Palermo sky, the church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti recalls the architectural style of mosques. The origins of the building date back to the 6th century; after being transformed into a mosque during the Arab domination, it was restored by Roger II to its original worship around 1136. A major renovation affected the church around 1880 by Giuseppe Patricolo.
The cloister is of Norman age and greatly influenced by the proximity of the Royal Palace just a few meters away.
