The University Library of Pavia is among the oldest public libraries in Italy. It belongs to the State and reports to the Directorate General for Libraries and Cultural Institutes of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.
Like other state public libraries, it preserves and collects Italian editorial production at both national and local levels, protects and enhances its historical collections, acquires foreign editorial production based on the specifics of its collections and considering user needs, documents its holdings, provides bibliographic information, and ensures the circulation of documents.
The name and location may be misleading, but in reality, the Library is not legally dependent on the University of Pavia, with which it has always maintained very close collaborative ties.
