La Biblioteca Universitaria di Pavia is one of the oldest Italian public libraries, belongs to the State and depends on the Directorate General for Libraries and Cultural Institutes of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.
Like other state public libraries, it preserves and collects Italian editorial production at national and local levels, protects and enhances its historical collections, acquires foreign editorial production based on the specificities of its collections and taking into account user needs, documents its holdings, provides bibliographic information, and ensures the circulation of documents.
The name and location may be misleading, but in reality the Library is not legally dependent on the University of Pavia, with which it nonetheless has always maintained very close collaborative relations.
