The area of the Forum of ancient Puteoli, built on a large panoramic terrace in front of the Rione Terra fortress, was identified in the nineteenth century following the discovery of several inscriptions, one of which specifically referred to the Forum Transitorium. At the site, a series of shops and a monumental nymphaeum made of opus latericium were later identified, in front of which opened a paved square, bordered by a portico with columns and marble flooring. At the end of the twentieth century, late antique shops also came to light, obliterated by a embankment constructed with ancient architectural marble elements reused. Abandoned after the 4th century AD, the Forum was covered by a road and layers of sand and pozzolana.
