Imposing and austere, the castle was the residence of one of the most powerful feudal families in the region.
Located on a hill, overlooking the entire Non Valley, it is surrounded by a complex system of fortifications consisting of towers, walls, bastions, a patrol walkway, and a moat dating back to the sixteenth century. The powerful Spanish Gate also dates from this period; beyond it lies the drawbridge and the first courtyard.
Here rises the imposing Baronial Palace.
In the vast interior spaces, numerous rooms follow one another, preserving the original rich furnishings and an interesting family art gallery.
The most valuable and fascinating room is the sixteenth-century Bishop’s Room, entirely lined with Swiss pine wood.
Thun Castle was acquired in 1992 by the Autonomous Province of Trento.
The building and furnishings are still undergoing careful and demanding restoration and study.
