Completing its profile are over 1500 km of trails and walks, the refuge circuit, villages full of character, glimpses of peasant and mountain life that have stood the test of time. A must-visit is the Rezia Botanical Garden tel.0342.927370, which from spring to autumn offers a unique display not only of the Park’s plant heritage but also of other high-altitude oases worldwide. Or the Scianno Wildlife Center, at the gates of Bormio, tel.0342.911448, where animals in distress are welcomed and cared for with great attention before being released back into the wild (admission is free). On the South Tyrolean side stands Aquaprad, in Prato allo Stelvio tel.0473.618212, a large and futuristic exhibition area dedicated to water and the forms of life that develop in it.
Stelvio Park Guide
Not to be missed are the offerings of the Stelvio National Park, one of the most prestigious and evocative parks, spanning Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige. Its nearly 135,000 hectares are largely mountainous and boast a massif like the Ortles-Cevedale, with its fabulous ridge of glaciers, including the Forni Glacier, the largest in the peninsula. The valleys below are true natural treasures: from Valfurva to Val di Rabbi, from Val Trafoi to the wild Val Zebrù, the only one in Italy where all four Alpine ungulates can be admired: chamois, ibex, deer, and roe deer.
