The Chemistry Museum is part of the Museum Hub of the University La SAPIENZA. It was established in 1986 and opened to the public in 1992.
It is located on the ground floor of the Chemistry Department. The museum covers an area of about 250 sqm divided into two rooms; one has a historical character, the second is dedicated to interactive experiments.
It displays and preserves scientific equipment, teaching instruments, collections of chemical substances, and documents belonging to S. Cannizzaro and his group, dating back to 1872, when Cannizzaro arrived in Rome and established the Royal Chemical Institute. Mention should also be made of cryoscopes, ebulliometers, thermometers, ancient instruments for elementary analysis, colorimeters, spectrometers, and von Schroeder’s color tables related to the first chemical plants.
Some equipment for measuring radioactivity, built by G.A. Blanc, who worked at the same Institute in the early 20th century, are also on display. The Museum also exhibits more recent chemical apparatus.
