The remains of the Roman house are visitable in the premises below the Spoleto Town Hall.
The visit allows you to understand the layout of a house belonging to the wealthier classes, common in Roman times, and to appreciate its rich floor and wall decorations.
The domus – the noble residence of the Roman era – was then located on the terrace above that of the forum square, in a position clearly visible from below. The exposed rooms are all elegantly decorated with mosaic floors, while the wall decoration is less well preserved. Centered around the atrium (atrium), compared to the canonical layout of the Roman house, it features the peristyle (peristilium), the colonnaded courtyard of the house, on the left side rather than at the back of the tablinium (tablinium), the most important room considered the owner’s “study”. Attributed at the time of discovery (1885-1914) to Vespasia Polla, mother of Emperor Vespasian, from an inscription found in the area containing a dedication to Caligula by a Polla, the domus has a decorative apparatus dating to the 1st century AD.
