The collection of works by the Barletta artist Giuseppe De Nittis, who lived during the 19th century and established himself artistically in France, in contact with notable figures such as Degas, Manet, Morisot, Caillebotte, is now preserved in the “Giuseppe De Nittis” Art Gallery inside the Baroque building Palazzo Marra on the 2nd floor, while 19th-century exhibitions are set up on the 1st floor. The latter was originally the residence of the Orsini family and later the Marra family, consisting of three floors facing an internal courtyard, characterized by a colonnaded loggia. The building extends on the two upper floors along the perimeter of the atrium, with wooden ceiling decorations on the first floor. The Palazzo features a large loggia, richly decorated and composed of five arches with cross vaults. The Art Gallery houses the artistic collection of De Nittis, donated to the city of Barletta by his wife Léontine Gruvelle, consisting of 146 paintings, 65 drawings of different types, together with books and a collection of letters. De Nittis’ production covers various themes inspired by places of high society such as cityscapes and horse races. Important are also the en plein air scenes and portraits, many of which feature Léontine as the model.
