The museum is located in the municipality of Assisi near the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, one of the most important places linked to the human and spiritual story of Saint Francis. The exhibition route is housed within the seventeenth-century Palazzo del Capitano del Perdono, reconstructed on the model and with the same materials as the oldest small palace built by the will of the Florentine Medici family in the mid-15th century.
Inaugurated in 2006, it houses 50 works by the artist Pericle Fazzini (Grottammare 1913 – Rome 1987) that fully represent his artistic activity: from the 1931 Self-Portrait to the Boy with Seagulls from 1940-1944, which became the museum’s logo, and up to the Bozzetto for the Risen Christ created in the 1970s for the Nervi Hall in the Vatican.
Dedicated to the figure of Saint Francis are the San Francesco speaks and caresses the wolf, a wooden work from 1939, as well as a series of small sculptures, projects, drawings, and engravings. Three rooms on the first floor and the connecting corridor host the permanent collection, while on the upper floor, a room is set aside for temporary exhibitions.
