The Olive and Oil Museum (MOO) is housed within the village of Torgiano; a renowned wine-producing center between Perugia and Assisi. The exhibition route is set inside an ancient olive mill, the result of the merging of three different houses and used until the last century. Since 2000, it has been the home of the Olive and Oil Museum, conceived and established on the initiative of Giorgio and Maria Grazia Lungarotti. Supported by the family business and managed by the Lungarotti Foundation, the museum traces, without geographical or temporal limits, the history and various uses of the olive tree and oil. Archaeological finds, ceramics, books, and other materials describe the mythological origins of the plant, its production, spread, and different uses of the olive and oil. Among the exhibited items is an alabastra, a flask intended to contain scented oils, an attic red-figure attributed to the Foundry Painter, 5th century BC. Extensive space is dedicated to the collection of oil lamps, from the pre-Roman age to the 20th century. One section deals with the olive and oil in symbolism, visual arts, and crafts; the showcase of Customs and Traditions recalls ancient popular beliefs and superstitions.
