Il Museo dell’Olivo e dell’Olio (MOO) is housed within the village of Torgiano; a renowned wine-producing center between Perugia and Assisi. The exhibition route is set inside an ancient olive oil mill resulting from the merging of three different houses and used until the last century. Since 2000, it has been the home of the Museo dell’Olivo e dell’Olio, conceived and created on the initiative of Giorgio and Maria Grazia Lungarotti. Supported by the family business and managed by the Lungarotti Foundation, the museum retraces, without geographical and temporal limitations, the history and the different uses of the olive tree and oil. Archaeological finds, ceramics, books, and other materials describe the mythological origins of the plant, production, dissemination, and various uses of the olive tree and oil. Among the displayed materials is an alabastra, an ampulla intended to contain perfumed oils, Attic red-figure pottery by the Foundry Painter, 5th century BC. Ample space is dedicated to the collection of oil lamps, from the pre-Roman era to the 20th century. One section deals with the olive tree and oil in symbolism, figurative arts, and craftsmanship; the showcase of Customs and Traditions recalls ancient popular beliefs and superstitions.
