Il Museo dell’Olivo e dell’Olio (MOO) is housed within the village of Torgiano; a renowned wine-producing center between Perugia and Assisi. The exhibition path is set inside an ancient oil mill, the result of the merger of three different houses and used until the last century. Since 2000, it has been home to the Olive and Oil Museum, conceived and realized through the initiative of Giorgio and Maria Grazia Lungarotti. Supported by the family business and managed by the Lungarotti Foundation, the museum retraces without geographical or temporal limitations the history and different uses of the olive tree and olive oil. Archaeological finds, ceramics, books, and other materials describe the mythological origins of the plant, production, diffusion, and the various uses of the olive tree and olive oil. Among the exhibited materials, an alàbastron, an amphora meant to contain perfumed oils, Attic red-figure by the Foundry Painter, 5th century BC. Ample space is devoted to the collection of oil lamps, from the pre-Roman age to the 20th century. A section addresses the olive tree and olive oil in symbolism, visual arts, and craftsmanship; the showcase of Customs and Traditions recalls ancient beliefs and popular superstitions.
