The Archaeological Museum of Parma is divided into two sections. The one that houses the historical collections includes spectacular materials from Veleia, among which are 12 marble statues of members of the Julio-Claudian imperial family (first half of the 1st century AD), notable Greek, Italic, and Etruscan ceramics, and the prestigious Egyptian section with sarcophagi, canopic jars, papyri, votive bronzes, and the important Magnarini Collection (429 scarab seals dated from 2100 to 525 BC).
The extensive medal collection is not usually open to the public.
The section that preserves the evidence from the province of Parma includes prehistoric materials from the Paleolithic to the Bronze Age (important Neolithic finds, including some burials, and those from the “terramare” Bronze Age settlements), protohistoric (Etruscan and Ligurian), Roman (statues, architectural fragments, mosaics, funerary inscriptions from Parma and the territory, and a treasure trove of jewelry and coins from the 3rd century), and Lombard (jewelry from some tombs).
It is possible to purchase a single cumulative ticket for all the Museums of the Pilotta Monumental Complex which allows visiting with one ticket the Farnese Theatre, National Gallery, and Archaeological Museum. The single ticket office for all the museums in the Pilotta is located at the ticket office of the National Gallery.
