The museum was established inside the building formerly used by the State Railways as the city’s Lido station. The railway structure was renovated by the Cultural Association for the Protection of the Musical Instrument, led by Dr. Spagna. Initially, the pieces, waiting to find their final location within the current facility, were exhibited at the “Citrus Fair” stands and in the Pentimele Oasis Village. The museum displays around 800 instruments divided into the 5 instrumental families of idiophones, membranophones, aerophones, chordophones, and mechanical-electrical instruments. The museum was created to preserve and enhance the instruments, as well as to study them. These musical instruments come from all over the world. They are also cataloged based on their musical tradition: ethnic music, popular tradition, and the Western “cultured” tradition.
