Opened in 1938 on the initiative of Romeo Galli, librarian and curator of the city’s civic art collections of Imola, it is located on the ground floor of the former convent of San Francesco, which also houses the Municipal Library and the Theater. The initial core consists of materials donated by Count Antonio Domenico Gamberini (1831-1910), patriot and deputy in 1859 of the Assembly of the Romagne, and includes weapons, uniforms, letters, iconographic evidence, bans and proclamations documenting the participation of the people of Imola in the events of the Risorgimento. The material is displayed in five rooms according to a chronological criterion. Currently, the Museum is not open to visitors. The first room, dedicated to the French occupation (1796-1814), contains documentation on Pius VII Chiaramonti, who was bishop of Imola. The second documents the first uprisings and the first war of independence (1821-1849) with relics and documents about Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti, bishop of Imola and later Pope Pius IX. The Garibaldi events are largely illustrated in the third and fourth rooms, while the last section of the museum is dedicated to the contribution of the people of Imola to the colonial wars and the First World War.
