The Museum of Gates and City Walls of Perugia is set up inside the largest of Perugia’s medieval gates, a grand battlemented structure of ashlar and bricks, called the Cassero di Porta Sant’Angelo, in the homonymous district, at the terminal stretch of Corso Garibaldi.
The museum is organized following a documentary path on the history of the city’s three defensive walls.
On the entrance floor, there are some panels describing the history of the city of Perugia through the centuries and some scale models depicting the three phases of expansion of the city walls: the oldest Etruscan wall, the medieval one including the Cassero, and the Renaissance wall.
On the upper floor, there are reproductions of the main gates for each phase of expansion, the scale model of the Etruscan Arch, the Cassero di Porta Sant’Angelo, and the Renaissance Porta San Pietro decorated with bas-reliefs by Agostino di Duccio.
From the tower roof, surrounded by a Guelph battlement, you can also admire a spectacular panorama of the city.
