The museum is located in the historic center of Perugia, inside the Rocca Paolina.
The documentary material exhibited in the rooms adjacent to the Porta Marzia illustrates the history of the Rocca, built between 1540 and 1543 based on a design by Antonio da Sangallo by order of Pope Paul III Farnese, from whom it took the name. Constructed by incorporating the entire medieval Baglioni district, it was itself demolished in 1860, when Perugia gained autonomy from the papal government. Today, the mechanized transport system that crosses its structures is the main pedestrian connection axis to the city center.
