Mario and Fernando Papi, respectively father and brother of Roberto, to whom the museum is dedicated, have made available to the Municipality of Salerno a collection of medical-surgical equipment and historical instruments, some of which are extremely rare and related to all branches of medicine. Roberto Papi, originally from Rome, spent his life collecting extremely rare pieces, and the originality in the creation of this museum lies in the research and attention to detail with which the precious objects dated between the 17th and 20th centuries were placed.

To intrigue visitors and to recreate the atmospheres of past centuries, many rooms have been set up as scenes of medical life. This collection is spread over two levels in large rooms of the historic Palazzo Galdieri located on via Trotula de Ruggiero, a street with a significant name that further emphasizes the importance and merits held by the distinguished Salerno Medical School.

The instruments catalogued and distributed in the different rooms are organized by medical-surgical disciplines, specifically represented by anatomy, anesthesiology, general surgery, military surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, dentistry, obstetrics and gynecology, otorhinolaryngology, pulmonology, rehabilitation, traumatology and urology.

The route assigned to the visit through the 14 rooms open to the public has been designed by themes, following an educational-demonstrative logic.
