The museum collects documentation on the history of the city of Florence.
It originated as the Topographical Museum in 1909 with a provisional exhibition at Casa Buonarroti and was later moved to the Convent of St. Mark, intended to complement the pre-existing Museum of Ancient Florence by integrating a collection of architectural and sculptural fragments recovered from the demolitions of the late 19th century in the old city center. In 1955, it was relocated to its current headquarters under the name Florence as It Was.
