Formerly the Museum of Computing and History of Calculation, Mateureka revisits the tools, ideas, and concepts related to the history of calculation and mathematics, from the first objects used by the Sumerians and Egyptians for accounting operations to modern computers. The exhibition path develops over the four floors of the ancient town hall of Pennabilli. The visits are enriched by the periodic arrangement of temporary exhibitions. Following a chronological order, on the first floor numerous materials and explanatory panels illustrate the path man has taken in the world of mathematics. Among the objects on display: Sumerian tablets dating around 2500 BC, Roman steles and Etruscan inscriptions, abaci, Chinese suan pan, Japanese soroban, Russian schoty, Inca quipus, and Peruvian chimpús, Luca Pacioli’s Summa, astrolabes, the Aztec calendar, Napier’s cylinders and rods. The next floor is dedicated to calculators and accounting systems, while some mathematical concepts such as Pi or the Pythagorean theorem are reproduced and can be experimented with in the rooms on the third floor and in the various educational rooms of the museum. The last section explores the world of computing and computers.
