Il percorso stradale tra le antiche chiese di San Martino di Albenga e di S. Croce di Alassio costituisce uno dei tratti più suggestivi e meglio conservati dell’antica via Iulia Augusta, la strada aperta dall’imperatore Augusto tra il 13 e il 12 a.C. per collegare, attraverso un itinerario costiero, la pianura padana con la Gallia e la Spagna.
Along the ancient road, the ruins of at least seven buildings from the Imperial Roman period can be seen, datable between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. While it is not possible to specify the nature of two of them, the remaining five are certainly interpretable as tombs. Of these, one is a columbarium, the others are funerary enclosures, true family tombs.
