The climate is thermo-Mediterranean subhumid (average annual rainfall 732 mm, average annual temperature 18 C). The area is divided into Hortus Generalis (13,000 sq m), which mainly houses exotic plants, and Hortus Siculus (3,000 sq m), dedicated to the cultivation of native Sicilian species.

The Hortus Generalis, in formal Italian style, is divided by orthogonal paths into twenty-two geometric sections bordered by wide steps of local limestone; the regularity of the shapes is accentuated by the presence of three circular pools, used for cultivating aquatic plants.

The Hortus Siculus, with its collection of spontaneous island plants, represents a unique sector. A recent renovation enabled the creation of diversified areas where some typical Mediterranean habitats have been reproduced (dune environment, rock gardens, wet areas, woodland and Mediterranean scrub). In these environments, alongside common and widespread plants, there are species that are extremely rare in Sicily.
