The Museum was founded in Sorrento in 1924 thanks to the will of Alfredo and Pompeo Correale di Terranova, descendants of an ancient and noble family. The two brothers stipulated that, upon their death, the precious art collections belonging to the family for centuries would be organized into a museum bearing their name. Today, the Museum spans the four floors of the eighteenth-century Villa Correale, surrounded by a splendid garden leading to a panoramic terrace overlooking the sea. The art collections, arranged to recreate the atmosphere of an aristocratic residence, offer a broad and comprehensive testimony of pictorial and decorative arts from the 15th to the 19th century. Famous are the collections of still lifes and landscapes and the collections of 18th-century European porcelains. Of great importance are the precious furniture and rare Italian and European clocks of the 18th century. Historical library with Tassian editions and important texts from the 16th to 19th century.
