The oldest core of Palazzo Zagarese (named after one of the notable families of Casentino who owned the palace and many other properties) housing the Museum, appears to date back to 1695. After the earthquake of 1854, the building was modified; a double loggia with arches was added (on the lower part), a colonnade with neoclassical Doric capitals (on the upper part), and a terrace. The building surrounds a courtyard. Since 1980, the museum has been located in the right wing. Restoration work was carried out on the structure from 2001 to 2002. The museum consists of nine rooms, spread over a raised ground floor with a staircase entrance and a first floor. The museum is divided into two sections: folklore and the art gallery, named respectively after Raffaele Lombardi Satriani and Achille Capizzano.
