The museum, owned by the Banca Popolare di Sondrio, is named after engineer Carlo Donegani (1775-1845), the designer of the Stelvio road. The exhibition area consists of 3 sections. The most significant, dedicated to the “Great War,” features panels with period photos, with commentary in Italian and German, as well as a display case containing a large collection of relics – found and donated by Mario Pasinetti – from the wartime period. There is also a trench fragment made using artifacts from the battle sites. This section represents the ideal starting (or ending) point for a visit to a larger and more evocative museum: the open-air one, consisting of a dense network of paths, fortifications, and trenches. One section of the area recalls the work of engineer Donegani and houses copies of the original technical and historical documentation from his road project. The Stelvio road was commissioned by the Imperial Royal Lombard-Venetian Government and completed in just five years (1820-1825). The last section is dedicated to the events that helped make the Stelvio Pass famous: events related to winter sports, cycling, mountaineering, motorcycling, and automotive racing.
