It is a Museum dedicated to the history of the Brotherhood. The rooms, set up as a permanent exhibition, contain objects and images related to almost 8 centuries of the Confraternity’s life. Drawings, watercolors, paintings, sacred objects of the Florentine school, and items tied to tradition: such as the black robe, the book with the first chapters, the ballot boxes used for voting, the basket (zana), the stretchers, the first stretchers with which the sick were transported in the past.
The Museum represents a small gem also thanks to the dedication and commitment of some confreres who work on its continuous improvement and expansion.
The building in Piazza del Duomo, donated by the Medici, also houses other valuable works that make our artistic heritage a small jewel for our City.
A Madonna by Ghiberti, the magnificent composition by Andrea della Robbia, which surmounts the altar of the Oratory, the beautiful Saint Sebastian martyr, patron of the brotherhood, a work by the renowned sculptor Benedetto da Maiano, and also the famous Madonna of Mercy, housed in the tabernacle-shaped support, always in the Oratory, undoubtedly of Florentine school, specially created for our Company.
The Museum thus brings to life the history of the oldest Mercy in the World, born in 1244, through its objects.
