The artworks of the Art and Arts Gallery collection of the Chamber of Commerce are the autobiography of a culture, an era, a city, Mantua, which is a unique example of the combination of culture and economy.
The ancient works consist of the Portraits of the Consuls from the year 1450, frescoes attributed to Gerolamo di Giovanni da Camerino; the Four allegorical figures painted by Giorgio Anselmi in 1772-1773 to celebrate the virtuous and enlightened government of Maria Theresa of Austria; the Dead Christ by Felice Campi from 1794.
The 20th-century collection includes many of the outstanding names in Mantuan painting and sculpture of the century. There is a clear preference for landscape and Lombard subjects: the 1920s Novecentismo, elegiac realism, chiaroscuro, and the new trends of the 1960s. Finally, a significant series of abstract-inspired works is present.
The artistic heritage has been enriched with acquisitions received on the occasion of the five editions of the “Chamber of Commerce – Francesco Bartoli” Award, held between 2000 and 2004 and dedicated to the memory of the great Mantuan art scholar and critic.
