The first core of the museum was formed in 1888 following the donation to the Municipality of Forlì of memorabilia and documents on the life and political activity of Piero Maroncelli (1795-1846), made by his wife Amalia. It was then further enriched thanks to bequests and deposits from citizens of Forlì, especially in the early decades of the 20th century, until it held a vast collection spanning from the Napoleonic period to the Second World War. Since 1964, it has been housed on the main floor of Palazzo Gaddi, where eight large rooms are named after different figures or dedicated to specific historical aspects and themes. Three sections are reserved for three protagonists of the Risorgimento: Piero Maroncelli, Achille Cantoni, and Aurelio Saffi. Following are the rooms of the XI Infantry Regiment, a glorious unit stationed in Forlì, where the Historical Diary from 1871 to 1938 is on display; the First World War with memorabilia from Forlì combatants (including Fulcieri Paulucci de Calboli); the African Wars (particularly well-documented is the Ethiopian campaign); the Second World War with photos of the fallen from 1940 – 1943 and materials relating to the Resistance activities of the Corbari partisan group. In the corridors, posters, weapons, and memorabilia of Carlo Matteucci are preserved. Attached to the museum is the Raniero Paulucci de Calboli room which houses fine bindings (16th-20th centuries), furnishings, and sculptures by Adolfo Wildt, also donated to the city of Forlì by Raniero himself in memory of his son Fulcieri. Restoration work on the Palace, started in 2004, required moving the museum to the ground floor of the building, where the limited space temporarily made it impossible to exhibit materials from the Second World War and the African wars.
