Jungfrau Train Itinerary

Departure from Grindelwald. In just under an hour, the little train reaches the intermediate station of Kleine Scheidegg at 2061 meters, the meeting point with the Interlaken-Lauterbrunnen-Wengen line. Here it is advisable to make a stop to get used to the altitude and admire the spectacle offered by the three giants of the Bernese Alps: the Eiger (3970 meters, whose summit was first conquered in 1938 by an expedition of two Germans and two Austrians, one of whom was Heinrich Herrer, the same from “Seven Years in Tibet,” the novel and film); the Monch (4099 meters) and the Jungfrau (4158 meters). From here on, the train runs for 7 km with slopes up to 25% on a thrilling rack railway, carved into the belly of the Eiger between 1896 and 1912, when modern materials and construction systems did not yet exist (the amazing thing about the whole work lies precisely in this).

In the tunnel, the little train stops twice: at Eigerwand (2865 meters) and Eismeer (3160 meters), where from open windows in the mountain you can admire the dizzying peaks of the Oberland. Arriving at 3454 meters at Jungfraujoch, one realizes that they have overcome an elevation difference of 2420 meters from Grindelwald and 2886 meters from Interlaken.

From what is the highest station in Europe, the eye can also capture the immense Aletsch glacier, the Black Forest, and the French Vosges: a vast and unforgettable spectacle. It is, of course, a trip advisable in summer, with good visibility conditions and high mountain equipment.

Once on the Jungfraujoch, you can choose what to do: sit at one of the restaurant tables and enjoy the view through the windows; visit the Eispalast, a gigantic cave carved into the ice, populated by sculptures and works of art always frozen; or take the elevator and reach the terrace of the Sphynx, from where you can start an excursion towards the Monch or the Jungfrau.
