You can board the Jungfrau Railway either from Interlaken or from the green valleys of Grindelwald, and reach a world of snow and ice thanks to the highest railway in Europe.
Jungfrau Train Itinerary
Departure from Grindelwald. In under an hour, the train reaches the intermediate station of Kleine Scheidegg, at 2061 meters above sea level, where it connects with the Interlaken-Lauterbrunnen-Wengen line. This is a recommended stop to acclimatize to the altitude and enjoy the view of the three giants of the Bernese Alps: the Eiger (3970 meters, first climbed in 1938 by a team of two Germans and two Austrians, including Heinrich Harrer, author of “Seven Years in Tibet”); the Mönch (4099 meters); and the Jungfrau (4158 meters). From here, the train climbs 7 km along gradients up to 25% on an impressive cog railway, cut inside the Eiger between 1896 and 1912, at a time before modern construction materials and techniques (which makes the achievement even more extraordinary).
Inside the tunnel, the train makes two stops: at Eigerwand (2865 meters) and Eismeer (3160 meters), where panoramic windows carved into the mountain offer dizzying views over the Oberland peaks. Reaching Jungfraujoch at 3454 meters, you realize you’ve climbed 2420 meters from Grindelwald and 2886 meters from Interlaken.
From the highest station in Europe, your gaze takes in the vast Aletsch glacier, the Black Forest, and the French Vosges: a truly breathtaking and unforgettable panorama. This is an excursion best enjoyed in summer, with good visibility and proper mountain gear.
Once on the Jungfraujoch, you have several options: relax at a restaurant table and admire the views; visit the Eispalast, a giant ice cave featuring frozen sculptures and art; or take the lift up to the Sphinx viewing terrace, a starting point for hikes to Mönch or Jungfrau.
