Antique and renowned is, for example, the art of weaving chestnut or willow wicker, to create beautiful baskets of all shapes and sizes. Rich and interesting is also the goldsmith tradition, especially regarding filigree jewelry and ornaments, which are strongly influenced by Byzantine style. Or that of carpentry, with precious works crafted by the hands of skilled artisans.
But the flagship of Silan productions are the rugs and textile garments, which have their roots in various small towns, foremost of all, San Giovanni in Fiore, where even today women, using rudimentary and fascinating hand looms, create wonderful and high-quality pieces.
Among these, the so-called ozaturi, heavy quilts for the cold season, but also rugs and incredible tapestries. Every year, in July, in the shadow of the magnificent Abbazia Forense, the ancient village hosts the Exhibition of Typical Fabrics, which allows visitors to discover an art cultivated in small workshops or even within home walls, and which, besides fabrics and rugs, also produces elaborate embroideries, such as the turnisti, with which linen fabrics are decorated.
