Il Museo del Parco delle Pianelle di Martina Franca is located in the eighteenth-century Palazzo Ducale and houses inside it evidence of the rich environmental heritage of the Parco Naturale delle Pianelle, a particular ecosystem located in the Murge between Massafra, Cristiano, and Martina Franca, characterized by a typically Mediterranean flora. The Museo delle Pianelle was born in 1999 with the aim of creating a scientific-educational structure capable of ensuring the enjoyment of the Parco Naturale, so much so as to constitute a prelude to the visit to the natural reserve. The headquarters of the naturalistic Museum is the splendid Palazzo Ducale from the second half of the 17th century, built by the will of the eighth duke of Martina Petracone V Caracciolo on the remains of the ancient castle of Raimondello del Balzo Orsini from 1338. The building, whose facade is in baroque style, consists of a large staircase that leads to a baroque portal allowing access to the precious halls of the Palazzo: Cappella dei Duchi, Sala dell’Arcadia, Sala del Mito, and Sala della Bibbia. On the second floor of the Palazzo, a modern multifunctional structure of the Museum illustrates the landscape and cultural riches of the Riserva delle Pianelle.
