Il Bargello National Museum is located in an imposing building constructed around the mid-thirteenth century for the Captain of the People, which later became the seat of the Podestà and the Council of Justice.
Since 1865, some of the most important Renaissance sculptures, including masterpieces by Donatello, Luca della Robbia, Verrocchio, Michelangelo, and Cellini, have been housed in the palace, which became the National Museum.
Later, the museum was enriched with prestigious collections of bronzes, maiolica, waxes, enamels, medals and coins, ivories, tapestries, furniture, seals, goldsmithery, weapons, and textiles, partly deriving from the Medici collections and partly from private donations.
