The National Bargello Museum is located in an imposing building constructed around the mid-13th century for the Captain of the People, which later became the seat of the Podestà and the Council of Justice.
Since 1865, the palace, which became the National Museum, has housed some of the most important Renaissance sculptures, including masterpieces by Donatello, Luca della Robbia, Verrocchio, Michelangelo, and Cellini.
Subsequently, the museum was enriched with prestigious collections of bronze sculptures, majolica, waxes, enamels, medals and coins, ivories, tapestries, furniture, seals, goldsmith works, weapons, and textiles, partly from the Medici collections and partly from private donations.
