Il National Bargello Museum is located in an imposing building constructed around the mid-13th century for the Captain of the People, which later became the seat of the Podestà and the Council of Justice.

Starting from 1865, some of the most important Renaissance sculptures, including masterpieces by Donatello, Luca della Robbia, Verrocchio, Michelangelo, and Cellini, were housed in the palace, which became the National Museum.

Later, the museum was enriched with prestigious collections of bronze statuettes, majolica, waxes, enamels, medals and coins, ivories, tapestries, furniture, seals, goldsmithery, weapons, and textiles, partly from Medici collections and partly from private donations.
