The Visconteo Castle of Pavia was built by Galeazzo Visconti between 1360 and 1365. The visit route takes place inside rooms that still preserve precious frescoes from the Visconti and Sforza periods. Although deprived of the northern wing through which the ducal residence overlooked the Park, thus connecting it to the Charterhouse, the Castle maintains intact the evocative harmony of the masterpiece, among the most distinguished of late Gothic Lombard architecture.
Since the post-war period, the Castle has housed the Civic Museums of Pavia, which include the archaeological and early medieval section with splendid Roman, Gothic, and Lombard finds, the Romanesque and Renaissance section, the Malaspina Art Gallery with works from the 14th to the 16th century and that of the 17th and 18th centuries, the 19th-century picture gallery, the Morone Collection, the Museum of the Risorgimento, the Plaster Cast Gallery and the Robecchi Bricchetti Ethnographic Museum, as well as a space for temporary exhibitions. With the restoration of the Castle Stables, the Civic Museums have recently been enriched with an additional exhibition space.
