Il progetto del MIAAO, International Museum of Applied Arts Today, was born in 2003 after the success of Artigiano metropolitano, a celebratory event for the Centennial of the 1902 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Arts in Turin. The museum is housed in the monumental complex of San Filippo Neri and is divided into two galleries. The first gallery, located on the first floor, is called Soprana and was inaugurated in November 2005; it houses the museum’s permanent collection. The second gallery, on the ground floor, called Sottana, was opened to the public in November 2006, marking the beginning of the museum’s regular exhibition programming and hosting temporary exhibitions. The MIAAO is the only institution in Italy dedicated to these arts of design, and its mission also aims at enhancing the excellence of craftsmanship in the Piedmont Region.
