La tipografia Grifani-Donati is located just steps from the central square of Città di Castello in front of the town hall in a medieval building on Corso Cavour.
The spaces occupied by the printing house overlook the church of San Paolo, formerly a convent and later a prison.
Founded in 1799, it is one of the oldest active printing houses in Italy.
Since the 1870s, when the printing industry was introduced in Città di Castello, Grifani Donati focused on a narrow market, having as clients mainly public administrations, ecclesiastical bodies, wealthy families, as well as intellectuals and artists. The current owners, Gianni Ottaviani and his wife Adriana, have continued the family tradition, adding to the printing production, which was the main sector of activity, the intaglio printing (etching, drypoint, burin engraving techniques, etc.), stone lithography, acquiring printing presses and related equipment, as well as bookbinding and restoration.
Visitors who climb the steep staircase leading to the printing house will experience a journey into the past, seeing, in the room that still preserves its old appearance, wooden drawers full of types, old posters, and the still functioning machinery from that era.
Guided and demonstration visits are offered for individuals, groups, and school classes, and training and advanced courses are organized.
