Among the wonders of the province of Messina: the Greco-Roman theater of Taormina.
It was created by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC and later modified by the Romans.
After that of Syracuse, it is the largest theater of Greek origin in all of Sicily.
Stone blocks from Taormina (similar to marble) are found under the stage, a typical way of building by the Greeks.
The Romans in the following centuries began their work of renovation and expansion which took about ten years.
