Among the wonders of the province of Messina: the Greco-Roman theater of Taormina.
It was created by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC and later modified by the Romans.
After the one in Syracuse, it is the largest Greek-origin theater in all of Sicily.
Blocks of Taormina stone (similar to marble) are found beneath the stage, a typical Greek construction method.
In the following centuries, the Romans began their work of renovation and expansion, which took about ten years.
