Visiting Trieste: Historic and Religious Buildings

Remarkable is also the Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino, in Renaissance style, which hosted the oldest Italian shipping company and is now the seat of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. Or the Palazzo del Governo with its facade of golden mosaics and white stones, opened by a portico; or Palazzo Vanoli in Art Nouveau style and Palazzo Pitteri with a classical imprint. But Trieste is full of architectures and picturesque corners. Not to be missed is certainly the Canale Grande with Piazza del Ponte Rosso, also known as the Teresian district: beautifully restored, it has become a place for elegant strolling and a dock for pleasure boats. Just a few steps away stand the church of St. Anthony with its neoclassical facade, that of San Spiridione with blue domes, a place of worship for Serbian Orthodox believers; Palazzo Gopcevich in neo-Renaissance taste and Palazzo Carciotti, which reflects right in the waters of the Canal. Also unmissable are the late 18th-early 19th century palaces of Piazza della Borsa or the Art Nouveau houses of Casa Smolars and Casa Bartoli. Among the religious architectures stand out again the cathedral of San Giusto on the Capitol hill and the church of San Silvestro, the oldest in the city, built outside the Roman walls. Trieste also offers three wonderful castles: Miramare, built in 1856 by Maximilian of Habsburg; San Giusto which dominates the city from the top of its homonymous hill and Duino, a real fortified village, nestled in the bay of Sistiana. Prestigious is the Teatro Verdi, a reference point for famous artists.
