The museum occupies the premises on the first floor of Villa de Brandis, built between 1718 and 1724 and donated, with all the furnishings, to the Municipality of San Giovanni al Natisone by Countess Caterina de Brandis, the last descendant of the noble family.
Villa de Brandis preserves important artistic collections such as the Quadreria, with paintings from the 14th to the 20th century, and a significant number of original wooden furnishings and interesting utensils (16th-19th century). The family library (about six thousand volumes published between 1501 and 1980), the photographic archive, and the documents of the family archive are located at the Civic Library, adjacent to the rooms where the museum is located.
Behind Villa de Brandis stretches a centuries-old park, designed according to the English garden concept, with magnolias, palms, beeches, hornbeams, cedars, lindens, large thuja trees, and a suggestive central pond.
