The main entrance is located in Piazza Parlamento, the carriage entrance and the tourist entrance are on Piazza Indipendenza, opposite Palazzo d’Orleans, the seat of the presidency of the Sicilian Region.
In addition to the Palatine Chapel, the construction parts attributed to the Normans are the Pisan Tower, home to the Treasury room, and the Gioaria Tower, which houses on the lower floor the Armigers’ hall and on the upper floor, the so-called “Parliamentary Floor,” the Hall of Winds and King Roger’s hall decorated with Byzantine school mosaics depicting hunting scenes.
On the second floor of the palace there are also the Hall of Hercules, the current meeting place of the Sicilian Regional Assembly, the Yellow Hall, and the Viceroys’ Hall.
The rooms are connected to the so-called crypt by two side staircases. The crypt is actually a church inspired by Byzantine architecture consisting of a square-plan room underneath the presbytery, divided by two stone columns and characterized by a large central apse and two smaller lateral apses.
