The main entrance is located in Piazza Parlamento, the carriage and tourist entrances are on Piazza Indipendenza, in front of Palazzo d’Orleans, the seat of the Sicilian Regional Presidency.
In addition to the Palatine Chapel, the parts of the building attributed to the Normans are the Torre Pisana, home to the Treasury room, and the Torre della Gioaria, which houses the Hall of the Armigers on the lower floor and, on the upper floor, the so-called “Parliamentary floor,” the Hall of the Winds and the hall of King Roger decorated with Byzantine school mosaics depicting hunting scenes.
On the second floor of the palace there are also the Hall of Hercules, the current meeting place of the Sicilian Regional Assembly, the Yellow Hall, and the Viceroys’ Hall.
The rooms are connected to the so-called crypt by two side staircases. The crypt is actually a church inspired by Byzantine architecture, consisting of a square plan room underneath the presbytery, divided by two stone columns and characterized by a large central apse and two smaller lateral apses.
