Il Museo Civico di Bracciano is located inside the former convent of Santa Maria Novella, founded in the 15th century by the Augustinian friars. The building, restored between 1998 and 2003, also houses the Municipal Historical Archive. The objects and artworks on display illustrate the life of Bracciano over the centuries from the first Etruscan settlements to the 19th century and are arranged in three sections: introductory, archaeological, and historical-artistic. The first section introduces the visitor to the museum and the Community of Bracciano, understood as the institution from which the Municipality will originate. There are maps and artifacts related to institutional life; of particular interest are the objects used in ancient times by the municipal councilors. In the archaeological section, part of the Panunzi collection is temporarily exhibited, which includes objects excavated in the Bracciano territory dating from the Etruscan period to the early Christian era; the arrangement follows a chronological order. The historical-artistic section, organized by themes, contains various works: the themed room “The patrons and the artists” contains works that were made for the major local public and private commissions by artists called to work in Bracciano or of Bracciano origin. At the center of the room, the beautiful sculptural group by Cristoforo Stati (1556-1619), an artist from Bracciano. In the themed room “Testimonies of sacred art” are exhibited objects, furnishings, and liturgical vestments from the nearby church of Santa Maria Novella, which was part of the convent. Of particular importance is the Christ Salvator Mundi, attributed to the circle of Andrea Bregno, dated to the late 15th century.
