Il Museo Interattivo del Giocattolo Povero e del Gioco di strada, also known as the Museo del Giocattolo Povero e del Gioco di strada, is located in the attic rooms of the Istituto Scolastico Comprensivo di Albano. The setup was curated by Donato Allegretti, a retired teacher originally from Albano di Lucania, with the collaboration of the local School Institute and the Department of Pedagogical and Didactic Sciences at the University of Bari.
The museum project aims at research, documentation, and enhancement of the traditional play heritage, especially through the recovery and conservation of popular and traditional toys, poor toys, and street games, otherwise destined to disappear. The collection mainly consists of a contemporary art collection on the theme of play, with over 250 works of various styles, including paintings, sculptures, graphics, collages, and mixed techniques. Almost all the works were donated by Italian and foreign authors to A.R.CA.GIO’. There is also an ethnographic collection of about a hundred toys from popular tradition, mainly from Basilicata and Puglia, but also some toys from northern Italian regions are exhibited. Most of these objects were collected and donated to the museum by its promoter and curator, Donato Allegretti. The ethnographic collection has recently been enriched with numerous traditional toys, including various reed whistles and a series of self-moving toys from the 1950s, handmade with corks and bottle caps. The setup is completed by a series of toys made by the students of the Istituto Scolastico di Albano di Lucania, which also includes students from Brindisi Montagna and Trivigno, during a school project carried out during the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 school years.
